Hello all.
I chose manuscript X because I liked the handwriting, was interested in the crossed out words and ink blots, and found the content interesting and kind of beautiful. I attempted to reproduce the original spelling and punctuation from the manuscript, so as to preserve the character of the piece; this is common practice with diary entries, letters, and the like, so I felt that it was the most appropriate approach to take in my transcription. I did, however, provide glosses and explanatory notes when I thought they would be useful to the reader. Basically, I wanted the reader have an experience reading my transcription that was as close as possible to my experience reading the manuscript, but without having to parse his or her way through the difficult passages. I felt that it would take away from the quality of the manuscript to edit out such words as "quisingly"; I looked it up and glossed it at "questioningly", which might be useful for an undergraduate reader, but does not really give the sense of the original word. I prefer to allow the reader the opportunity to interpret words such as these himself/herself.
